Schizophrenia is a group of severe mental disorders characterized by reality distortions resulting in unusual thought patterns, behaviors, and emotions. Psychotic symptoms include delusions, hallucinations, and thought disorder, and other negative symptoms include inappropriate emotional displays, flat emotional affect, poverty of speech, and lack of motivation. The major types of schizophrenia are disorganized, catatonic, paranoid, undifferentiated, and residual.
