Combination of Copper and Fats Contributes to Cognitive Decline

A recent study published in The Archives of Neurology suggests a correlation between elevated cognitive decline and intake of dietary fats and copper. 3,718 participants aged 65 and older were assessed for diet and cognitive function at baseline, 3 years, and 6 years. Individuals who consumed diets high in saturated and trans fats exhibited strong reaction to copper intake. Among these participants, those with the highest rates of copper intake demonstrated an increased cognitive decline of 19 years. Individuals who did not have diets high in saturated or trans fats exhibited no cognitive decline related to copper intake. http://archneur.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/abstract/63/8/1085
