The Young and the Incarcerated: Prevalence of Psychiatric Needs in British Inmates

A recent survey of 301 young offenders in Britain—either in custody or in the community—suggests that their mental health and psychosocial needs are quite high. 31% of respondents were found to have significant mental health needs, while 48% were found deficient in regard to social relationships. 20% registered an IQ <70. The researchers noted that offenders in the community had greater needs than those in prison.
