Problematic Internet Use: Are Males More Susceptible?
A report in CNS Spectrums discusses clinical approaches to problematic Internet use. This trend, though widely
recognized as a valid problem, has no standard clinical definition, and prevalence rates vary widely, from 3%–11%
of all Internet users. There are now studies indicating that males are more likely than females to meet criteria for problematic
Internet use. In one survey of 277 college students, 12% of males met criteria for problematic Internet use, compared to
3% of females, but other studies show no gender disparities. The authors suggest that such varying results demonstrate
the need for clinically based research.
