Biomarkers for Alzheimer’s Identified
Research recently published in the journal Brain has identified biomarkers that may allow clinicians to detect and diagnose Alzheimer’s disease long before symptom onset. Researchers analyzed blood samples from 511 elderly subjects with and without Alzheimer’s using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis with mass spectrometry. Several proteins were found that had previously been implicated in Alzheimer’s pathology, including complement factor H (CFH) and α-2-macroglobulin (α-2M). Elevated levels of these proteins were shown to be specific to Alzheimer’s patients in this study and to correlate with disease severity. http://brain.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/129/11/3042
