Quetiapine for Sleep Disturbance in Alcohol Dependence Recovery
Quetiapine for Sleep Disturbance in Alcohol Dependence Recovery
First published in Psychiatry Weekly, Volume 9, Issue 8; May 19, 2014
A small, prospective pilot study, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, evaluated the therapeutic effect of quetiapine XR for sleep disturbance in patients recovering from alcohol dependence (AD). Subjects received quetiapine XR (n=10) and placebo (n=10) for 8 weeks. Sleep assessments included subjective and objective measurements, including polysomnography and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, among others; the PHQ-9 for depression, and the Beck Anxiety Inventory. Those who received quetiapine XR initially reported subjective improvement in insomnia symptoms, although those differences were not sustained. In the quetiapine group there were nonsignificant trends for improved sleep latency onset, but no improvements in sleep efficiency compared to placebo. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/24747978
