First published in Psychiatry Weekly, Volume 7, Issue 3, February 6, 2012

45.9 million American adults—1 in 5 adults—experienced mental illness over the past year, according to a new national report. Nearly 30% of young adults (aged 18 to 25) were affected, compared to 14% of adults aged ≥50 years. Women were more likely to be affected than men (23% vs 16.8%). Thirty-nine percent of people with mental illness received mental health services, although that rate increased to 60.8% for people with serious mental illness. Substance dependence and addiction rates occurred at far greater rates in people who experienced mental illness, compared to those with no mental illness: 20% vs 6.1%, respectively. Among those with serious mental illness, over 25% had a substance dependence or addiction issue. www.samhsa.gov/newsroom/advisories/1201185326.aspx
