Steroid Use Related to Body-Image Issues

New research published in the American Journal of Psychiatry supports the contention that use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) by males is correlated with muscle dysmorphia. The study examined 89 males who worked out regularly: 48 AAS users and 41 non-users. No substantial differences were found between AAS users and non-users in regard to self-esteem and eating-related attitudes and behaviors, but AAS users were significantly more likely to have muscle dysmorphia (which is characterized by avoiding pleasurable activities due to body-image concerns) and to subscribe to ideas of traditional male roles. While body-image pathology and AAS use were correlated, more studies are needed to characterize the exact nature of the relationship. http://ajp.psychiatryonline.org/cgi/content/abstract/163/4/697
