Awake From Anxiety

As part of a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial, 128 youth (ages 6–17 years) were evaluated for sleep-related problems (SRPs) associated with anxiety disorders. Researchers examined the frequency of 8 specific SRPs relative to age, gender, and severity of anxiety, as well as the effect of fluvoxamine versus pill placebo. 88% of youth examined experienced at least one SRP, and 55% experienced 3 or more. Total number of SRPs was positively associated with anxiety severity and family dysfunction, and SRPs were significantly reduced in youth treated with fluvoxamine compared with placebo.
