Precocious Kids: Less Susceptible to PTSD?

A longitudinal study published in Archives of General Psychiatry has uncovered a correlation between high IQ and decreased risk for traumatic events, nonassaultive trauma, and PTSD in children. Samples were selected randomly from two Michigan hospitals (N=823), and were assessed at age 6 and followed up at age 17. With 86.6% of the initial sample reporting, researchers, using adjusted odds ratios, found that children aged 6 years with IQs ≥115 showed decreased risk for exposure to traumatic events, 0.3; decreased risk for nonassaultive trauma, 0.6; and decreased conditional risk for PTSD, 0.2.
